Ever wonder why a foot massage feels so good? With over 7,000 nerve endings in our feet, applying pressure can help relieve stress, anxiety, promote relaxation and an overall feeling of euphoria. Reflexology takes this up a notch and goes beyond a simple foot massage. It is based on the principle of energy zones and these zones correspond to and can affect the functioning of the different glands, organs and muscles in the rest of our body. Basically, the feet hold a map of the whole body.
Although only the feet are treated, all systems in the body (digestive, lymphatic, respiratory, etc.) are affected. It is a gentle yet very effective treatment that helps to remove energy blockages and stagnation, rebalances the body and encourages its natural healing ability. Reflexology is a great complement to other healing modalities and is also a nice introduction or alternative for those who are uneasy or physically unable to receive a full body treatment such as massage.
A full reflexology treatment is 45-60 min in length. The session starts with a warm towel to freshen the feet. Small movements with the thumbs and fingers are then used to work through areas of congestion with relaxing massage techniques integrated throughout. The treatment will leave you feeling relaxed, recharged and rejuvenated. Although all organ systems are treated, your treatment can be adjusted to address specific areas of concern. For serious ailments, it is advisable to first check with your doctor.
Benefits of a reflexology treatment:
- Increases the circulation of blood and lymph
- Calms the nervous system and relieves stress and anxiety
- Relaxes tense muscles
- Promotes better sleep
- Encourages body awareness
Fun Fact - Foot reflexology massage is an ancient healing art and dates back to 2300BC. Tombs in Egypt have been found to show early depictions of treatments being done on the feet!
