Osteopathy is a holistic, whole-body approach to healthcare that uses a subtle, hands-on technique called palpation to ‘listen’ to your body. Unlike massage, palpation is used to identify issues ranging from congestion to stiffness, while restoring proper function to bones, muscles, fluids (yes, fluids) and organs. Founded in the early 1800s by Dr. A.T. Still, Osteopathic Practitioners believe that the body functions as a unit. When one area of the body is in dysfunction, it will have repercussions in other areas.
Their objective is to restore balance where restrictions or abnormal tension in the body may impede proper function. The type of treatment someone might receive is based on the practitioners understanding of how the body’s systems are interconnected. Osteopaths work to release restrictions is order to restore free movement of the tissues and by doing so, aiding the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
Types of Osteopathic techniques
Gentle Soft-Tissue: This technique is used to alleviate restrictions in the musculoskeletal system (muscles, joints and ligaments).
Visceral Manipulation: This technique involves gentle mobilizations of the internal organs to treat a variety of conditions from low-back pain, constipation, acid reflux (heartburn) and insomnia to name a few.
Craniosacral: Ceb’sile is trained to use subtle movement patterns within the individual bones of the skull, locating the areas of restricted movement and directs gentle treatment to the area. This specific therapy is used to treat a variety of conditions such as concussions, migraines, anxiety, chronic lower back issues and more. Treatment is not limited to the skull. The neck and spine - specifically a triangular bone at the lowest part of the back that sits between you hip bones called the sacrum - are assessed and treated as well.
Conditions Osteopathy can treat:
Joint and muscular pain
Dysmennorrhea (painful periods)
Discomfort associated with pregnancy
Constipation and other digestive issues
A treatment from an Osteopath should leave you feeling relaxed and much looser. Depending on the underlying problems, symptoms as well as the treatment plan, follow-up treatments are suggested.
