What is Naturopathy?
Naturopathic medicine is a science-based tradition that mixes both art and philosophy. This system of medicine promotes wellness by stimulating the intuitive healing mechanisms of our bodies, either by strengthening the foundation or removing obstacles in order to cure. Because Naturopathy is so individualized, no two Nathuropathic Doctors - or NDs for short - will treat the same. Utilizing the principles of health promotion coupled with understanding that the body has the ability to heal itself, each ND has a different way of investigating and overcoming obstacles within the body with similar positive effects. Despite having differences in treatment style, all NDs follow the same following principles:
Implementing individualized treatment is key because no two bodies are the same, so there are no “protocols” for NDs to follow for each patient that they see. Care depends on many factors, including health history, risk factors (i.e. age, preexisting conditions, allergies, etc), lifestyle, patient preference and so forth.
Investigating the root cause of symptoms is the only true solution to an aliment. We all know band-aid solutions don’t last, and for something as important as your health, the aim is to make it sustainable. Dr. Tang works to find and target the root cause of your concerns to prevent them from resurfacing months or even years later.
Using holistic healing, naturopaths understand that our overall health is a combination of physical, mental, spiritual and emotional health, just as our bodies are made up of a combination of different systems that communicate with one another.
What are the benefits of Naturopathic Medicine?
NDs are often successful at treating chronic conditions that don't respond well to conventional medicine such as (but not limited to) fatigue, pain, sleep disturbance, thyroid dysfunction, mental health, sports injuries and digestive disorders. They are able to respond to the individual needs of their patients and develop a treatment plan that includes nutritional supplements, botanical medicine, lifestyle and dietary suggestions. Additional benefits include non-pharmaceutical treatments, a more personalized relationship with your doctor and decreased risk of side effects.
Dr. Tang understands and truly believes in the art of healing, which is more than dispensing a herbal remedy or nutritional supplement. In order to understand the patient's needs, Dr. Tang takes the time to listen to the patient's story. Effective naturopathic treatment requires patience and good communication. In most cases, patients know what’s wrong and what needs to be done, but don't necessarily know how to translate this into a plan of action. Dr. Tang can translate your story and assign priorities among the several options that may emerge.
If every ND is different, then what should I expect from Dr. Tang?
The first appointment tends to be longer than one with a conventional medical office, being 75 minutes long. In addition, patients will have to complete an extensive intake form before their appointment to guide Dr. Tang during the interview process. Much of the initial visit is listening to the patient's story, with all its twists and turns. Allowing patients the time and space necessary to share their story and history is an important process for developing an understanding of the patient's body.
Laboratory tests in combination with the patient's subjective story are sometimes used to determine the most effective treatment. Much like a tailor, a naturopath tries to find the best fit for the patient. This practice requires a lot of trial and error along with patience and good communication. This process culminates in an individually tailored treatment plan that actively engages the patient in their health.
Follow-up appointments are recommended (about 4-5) to assess how well the plan fits, make any necessary changes and, if necessary discuss lab results.
One of the first things Dr. Tang tells all her patients is that the treatments aren’t going to work unless you do. Diet and lifestyle (including the foundations of health such as sleep, stress management, etc) are the basis of all her treatments , and additional modalities such as supplementation come second to that.
